CONTRAPUNTO

Contrapunto, (Spanish for counterpoint) is a tale with two parts, Monocromo and Policroma.

They tell a story of  thoughtful interplay between opposites and competing forces.

As an artist, I respond to the powerful force of nature that creates growth, transformation and decay that can often mimic the human experience.

Its why I’m fascinated by natural minerals and gemstones.

A mineral specimen magnified under the jewellers loupe will unearth a microcosm of familiar and exotic worlds. Landscapes of frozen forms, a myriad of coloured zones as well as fractures and inclusions.

To really see a gemstone is to understand that they rely on these inclusions to create their signature effects. I want to give these otherworldly moments to someone else.

Focusing on the overlooked, the discarded and also their abstract qualities, I hope to give viewers the freedom to interpret what they see so they can let go of preconceived notions and associations, to discover new spaces and relationships.

Monocromo is an exercise in technical macro photography.These form studies are  comprised of a series of magnified and stacked exposures accentuating the sculptural form in the subject.

By contrast Policroma is a gestalt, made up of orderly and multi-coloured painted collages photographed through a colourless raw crystal. The image treatment is decidedly painterly and the final results display as abstract compositions.
